Katanagatari Vol.2 Limited Edition (First Look, Blu-ray, Japan)

by TMSIDR

Nur auf englisch:
I actually watched the BD, so I could write more than a „First Look“ but I still have so much stuff to go through, so I want to keep it short^^;.

Packaging

Another really nice looking by Aniplex that shows that Japanese customers at least get often very well done cases for their money^^. Everything looks very precious and fits the tone of the show perfectly.

There are no extras at all on the disc, but the menu animation looks still great^^.

Picture Quality

The show doesn’t offer many scenes that can offer lots of details, especially in this episode because of the long scene in desert. But some backgrounds still look very good but the sharpness varies between the scenes slightly. Nevertheless, the transfer is without issues and the series probably won’t never look better.

Audio Quality

It’s a normal PCM stereo mix and I didn’t hear any problems.

Screenshots

I used DGAVCIndex to create the screenshots.

Conclusion

The disc itself doesn’t provide extras this time but the bonus CD and the fine picture quality makes the purchase of a limited edition again worthwhile for me as a fan of NisiOisin’s work.

Subtitles

I used the English fansub subtitles by Mazui and retimed them. I tried to embed the fonts into the .ass but not all did appear correctly when I played the file in Media Player Classic, so if somebody knows why this is happening, please contact me. Furthermore, I removed the Kanji/Hiragana lines in the Opening/Ending, so that I don’t have to embed the 4 MB font…

Unfortunately, I can’t give exact instructions how to make the subtitles work, but I can give some hints:

1) Both episodes are stored in the 00000.m2ts that is located in the BDMVSTREAM folder.

2) This file can be played in Media Player Classic when the correct codecs are installed (ffdshow or CoreAVC), however the copy protection will normally prevent this.

3) There are two tools I know that should be able to remove the copy protection on the fly.

4) If the file can be played, you can open the subtitles under File->Load subtitle in Media Player Classic.

Download it here.
